By Alyssa | Navigating Unemployment in Israel: What She Learned So Far

Sometimes the hardest part about dealing with bureaucracy in Israel isn't gathering the documents, it's figuring out which documents are needed, where they need to be submitted, and whether anything important was missed along the way.

Alyssa is still in the middle of the process, so this isn't intended to be a complete guide. Instead, it’s a real experience shared with the Mixed Neshamot community in hopes of helping someone else who may be navigating unemployment benefits in Israel.

Step 1: Register with the Employment Office (שירות התעסוקה)

The first step was registering with the Employment Office (Sherut HaTaasuka).

From Alyssa's experience, they requested employment history, although it seemed they were mainly focused on her most recent job before unemployment.

She described this stage as somewhat confusing. There were many questions about work history, benefits, and employment details, and she wasn’t entirely sure whether everything had been uploaded correctly.

After completing the online registration, applicants have 15 days to schedule and attend an in-person appointment to complete the process.

Additional information required includes:

  • Resume/CV

  • Education details

  • Career history

  • Types of jobs currently being sought

Employment Office registration:

Step 2: Apply Through Bituach Leumi

As soon as the Employment Office registration was completed, Alyssa proceeded with submitting an unemployment application through Bituach Leumi.

Documents that may be required include:

  • Employment contract

  • Payslips

  • Tofes 100 (salary summary form from the employer)

  • Termination letter (if relevant)

  • Proof of income from a spouse (for married applicants)

One detail she found confusing involved contract extensions. Since her own contract had been extended multiple times, she learned that every extension document may not necessarily be required.

Applicants need payslips covering 12 months out of the previous 18 months.

In Alyssa’s case, some payslips came from another employer, and she submitted exactly 12 payslips.

If applicants already have:

  • Full employment contract

  • Tofes 100

  • Termination letter

...additional documentation may only be necessary for any missing periods.

Bituach Leumi application:

Important note: during registration, the applicant's name needs to be entered in Hebrew.

A Tip She Wishes She Had Known Earlier

One challenge Alyssa experienced was document uploading.

Since the system only gave her the option to upload documents directly through her phone camera, she strongly recommends preparing everything in advance, screenshots, PDFs, and photos.

Leaving the page for too long may result in being logged out, and not all information appears to save automatically. In her experience, part of the application progress was lost and needed to be entered again.

Current Status

Bituach Leumi accepted Alyssa's application fairly quickly.

However, she learned that payments only begin after Bituach Leumi receives documentation from the Employment Office, and those documents are only sent after the required in-person appointment takes place within the 15-day period.

As she continues through the process, more updates may follow. If sharing this experience helps make the process a little less overwhelming for someone else in the Mixed Neshamot community, then it’s already worth it
